Recommended Daily Feeding: We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. But a good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, adult dog fed once daily. Feeding Weaning Pups: Start puppies on dry or moistened Pro Plan as early as they begin to nibble at solid foods, generally 3-4 weeks of age. Feeding Growing Pups: Feed pups (to six months of age) all of the moistened Pro Plan they will consume at intervals throughout the day. If fed dry, Pro Plan may be kept before pups at all times. Feeding for Reproduction: Pro Plan provides the extra nutrition needed by reproducing females in stages of gestation and lactation. Food consumption may vary during gestation, so feed the amount needed to maintain the pregnant female’s ideal body condition. Food intake may double or even quadruple during lactation. Making the Switch to Pro Plan: Although you’ll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7-10 days to ease the transition from your dog’s current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you’re feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily. For your pet’s health, see your veterinarian regularly. Store in a cool, dry place.

Average commercial dog food

Only bought because it was what my pup was eating with the breeder. It was fine and I’m sure many dogs do okay with it. However it does not smell like the quality fresh nutrient dense food dogs deserve. I immediately switched to a higher end food, but it’s much more expensive. You get what you pay for. He would eat the purina but he didn’t love it. His new food (orijen) he slams and is capable of holding a 9 week old puppy’s full attention for training. Being said, I wouldn’t compare the two for the same reason you wouldn’t compare McDonald’s to a 5 star steakhouse.

Emergency Vet Visit

Our 2-year-old goldendoodle had been on Purina Pro Plan Active since we transitioned her to adult food - so approximately a year and a half. We never had any issues with this product until we received our order in September 2023. Immediately upon opening this new bag of dog food, our dog became ill, vomiting every single night. We did not originally attribute it to her food and thought perhaps she was experiencing anxiety or was having an upset stomach due to the length of time between her supper / breakfast feedings. We began giving her a small meal before bed - this made the vomiting worse. We self-administered anti-nausea medication prescribed to our other dog - this did not help. We then took her to an emergency vet who stated that we had already made all of the changes they would have suggested and so he prescribed STRONGER anti-nausea medication ($10 a pill for a week), as well as a month-long round of antibiotics and antacids. The entire visit cost over $400 plus the cost of medications. She improved only while on the expensive anti-nausea medication and immediately reverted to vomiting again once off of it. At that point we began researching new food options and, in our research, found that other people were reporting the same issues with their dogs on Purina Pro Plan with varying degrees of medical severity - some required hospitalization and some pets passed away. We also began speaking with friends, family, and colleagues and found several other people that we know who had experienced the same problem. We immediately began feeding our girl another brand of dog food, and she literally NEVER vomited again. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOOD TO ANYONE!!!! Do your research!
